Fred Fowler: Inner Landscapes: February 2011

Artist:                        Fred Fowler

I was born on Teesside. I studied art twenty five years ago at Sunderland Polytechnic, Backhouse Park, (now part of the University of Sunderland).

I am a member of Studio Q, based in Nile Street, Sunderland.

Exhibition title:      Inner Landscapes

My work is based on memories and imagination. It is an inner dialogue externalised. I see the world as a playground of on-going events. The works are a response. My earliest memories and influences were the Neo-Romantic artists of the 1940s and 50s. Over the years, my vision has been further influenced by many other artists, particularly the German Expressionists and the Abstract Expressionist Movement.

In recent years, the work I have been doing has increasingly moved away from the purely representational as I employ the element of chance. A painting can take several months, if not years, to complete.
